Simon was born and raised in Richmond. After leaving Waimea College he attended Nelson Polytechnic, completing a Carpentry course. Gaining high achievement in this course, Simon found employment as an apprentice builder with a local company. Upon completion of his apprenticeship, Simon founded his own business at the age of 21.
During this time Simon played senior rugby for Waimea Old Boys, enjoying a successful ten years of service to the club. He still enjoys a range of sports including touch rugby, fishing, water skiing, jet skiing and mountain biking, running & kayaking.
Between the ages of 21-26, Simon built up Simon Collett Builders Ltd to achieve 20 new homes per annum. The next step for Simon was to get involved in the housing company structure, and become both builder and businessman. With support of wife Kylie, Simon joined the Jennian group in 2001. This business has been a great success, look at it’s history.
“My Nelson based franchise holds the most franchise awards in Jennian’s 35+ year history. It’s a great business”.
Simon now has a manager running the day to day operations. Jennian Homes Nelson operates from a custom built building, including a selection centre at 8 Champion Road, Richmond. He has successfully established and sold Jennian businesses on the West Coast and Marlborough and has been heavily involved in the brands direction on a national level. Jennian Homes Nelson is Nelson’s most awarded Master Builder with more building awards than any builder across the top of the south. This extends to winning the following:
Nelson Tasman Business Awards:
- 2012 – Large Business Award
- 2011 – Supreme Business Award
- 2011 – Large Business Award
- 2011 – Innovation Business Award
- 2010 – Service Excellence Award
Simon also owns and operates a separate building brand; Milestone Homes (founded 2008). This brand operates in a different market segment to Jennian and has shown great growth to become a large player in the Nelson market. With both brands Simon has been the largest home builder across the top of the south for a number of years.
Simon lives locally with his wife Kylie with whom he has two daughters – Olivia and Brooklyn. He is highly involved in the Nelson community, supporting organisations such as the Heart Foundation Lottery Program, the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day five km run/walk and a large number of senior and school sports teams. “Giving back is enjoyable”, Simon says.
“I’m very excited about the next stage of my business career. With the combined skills and knowledge of my fellow shareholders I look forward to creating a large number of jobs and growth in the Nelson Tasman region.”
