A local Nelson lad, Graham spent his early years moving between Stoke and Richmond where he attended Waimea College.
Graham entered the industry through an apprenticeship in Carpentry & Joinery with local firm W.E Wilkes, completing his 4000 hours by mid-1979. Marrying in November that year, Graham shifted to Sydney for what turned out to be a two year stay.
During his time in Sydney, Graham worked on various building projects within the residential field. Work ranged from attic conversions in terrace homes to full renovations and major rebuilds. During this time in Sydney, Graham and his wife has their first child and in that same year (1985) he took up a position as foreman with a company specialising in pull down and rebuilds.
Graham then went on to found his own company, employing six workers and contracting back to his previous employer. He continued in this role for six years, during which he and his wife had two more children and bought and renovated two homes.
In late 1992, following a major slowdown within the commercial building sector in Sydney, Graham cast his eye back home to Nelson. Following a 5 day visit, Graham decided that residential property development was to be the next step in his career. He bought a property in Nelson, moving back to his hometown in October 1992.
Over the next 8 years, Graham spent his time buying property in Nelson. Here he redeveloped the sites, generally converting one house into three or four town houses. Getting involved in commercial property development, Graham decided the next step was to purchase the Nelson/Tasman GJ Gardner Homes franchise in late 2000.
“During my 13 years owning the franchise I have built around 630 homes and became involved in green fields development for residential housing culminating in the completion and build out of a 30 lot subdivision.”
The concept of providing well built, quality homes while controlling all costs from bare paddock to completion and then passing these savings onto the buyer is what attracted Graham to becoming part of the HLS team.
“I believe we share the same vision and values and I look forward to the next phase in what so far has been a long, fulfilling career associated with the residential housing market”.
