Andrew is a born and bred Nelson boy, completing his secondary education at Waimea College. Rugby was a big part of Andrew’s early years, representing Nelson at a national provincial level.

Andrew’s working life began with a butcher’s apprenticeship at a local supermarket. Upon becoming qualified he moved on to work at the Nelson Freezing Works for seven years. During this period, Andrew worked for Neil Ching Drainlayers during the off-season. Seeing that his future options at the freezing works were limited he began to work fulltime as a drainlayer and completed his drainlaying qualification.

In 1994, Neil decided to sell his business and Andrew was given the opportunity to take over in partnership with one of the other workers. At the time the business consisted of four workers and two excavators. Subsequently the partnership dissolved and Andrew, along with his wife, Deborah, became the sole owners of the now Ching Contracting ltd.

Over the last 20 years the business has been transformed from what was essentially a residential drainage business into Nelsons largest specialist drainage and water reticulation specialist.

“Starting with four workers, my company has grown, now employing 42 staff including drainlayers, water servicemen, excavator operators, labourers and truck drivers. The management team has been expanded to eight including qualified engineers and surveyors”.

Andrew’s success in business has culminated in winning the ‘Most Improved Business’ and ‘Large Business’ categories in the 2002 Commerce Nelson Business Awards. Ching Contracting also took out the ‘Commerce Nelson Business of the Year’ in 2002.

With the skills that Andrew acquired through expanding Ching Contracting Ltd into one of New Zealand’s leading specialised civil drainage companies, he has set up a number of successful companies from scratch.

Andrew and Deborah have enjoyed a considerable amount of success in business which has allowed them to support the local community. They have supported many different organisations from schools, sports clubs, charities & new buildings. They are excited to be a part of HLS Nelson, and hope they will be able continue to contribute to the local community for years to come.

“HLS is an exciting opportunity for me to use the experience and knowledge that I have gained over the past few years in the construction industry. I am honoured to be part of this group of well-respected, successful local businessmen. I feel that we can make a real difference by supplying well built, quality homes at the best value”.
